A Resident's Guide to Trash Collection, Bulk Pick Up & Recycling

We collect trash every week and recyclables every other week. Please call our office to find out what day we'll be in your neighborhood. In most cases a container with wheels will be provided for your trash. We offer 3 different size containers to suit your family needs.

Trash
1. Trash must be put out the night before your collection day and placed at the curb. Please be sure your trash receptacle is 3 to 5 feet away from any obstacles such as your recycling containers, mailboxes, trees, etc. Any obstructions that block the truck's access to your container may prevent the driver from emptying it.

2. We can help you if you need to dispose of any bulk items, such as mattresses, appliances, furniture, etc. for a small fee. You may also bring items to the town's transfer station on Old Turnpike Road on Saturdays. Call the town hall for the schedule. We will pick up your Christmas tree free of charge during the designated week.

3. Materials that are unacceptable for regular trash collection include all construction materials including, but not limited to: sheet rock, shingles, concrete, bricks, tile, etc. Sand, dirt, and rocks. Tires, car batteries, and auto parts. Hazardous material such as oil base paint, motor oil, propane tanks, etc. Grass clippings and leaves.

4. For extra bags of refuse, notify the office no later then 2 p.m. the previous business day of your collection day. A small fee will apply.

Holiday Pickup
We collect both trash and recyclables on most holidays EXCEPT Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Day and New Years Day. If your collection happens to fall on that day, we will collect the following day. Please call the office with any questions you may have as we cannot send trucks back to pick up.

Bulky Waste/Dumping Restrictions
Bulky items such as large appliances, carpeting and furniture can be collected as part of a bulky pick up for an additional charge. Call us in advance if you need to arrange for this service. All Southington trash is dumped at the Bristol facility where we are charged on a per ton basis to dispose of your trash. Authorities prohibit the collection of some materials. Be sure to read section 3 under "trash" to find out what is not acceptable.

Recycling
Collections are made every other week by our recycling trucks on the same day as your trash collection. Recycling should be placed 3 to 5 feet from your trash receptacle and placed out the night before along with your trash pick up. For office hours, contact them at 276-9430.

Containers
We have recycling containers with our logo printed on them. We will deliver to your door for a minimal fee of $10. These 18 gallon bins are a great solution for customers who generate a lot of recyclables. You may also pick up a recycling pail at the highway department.

We will provide you with a post card sized calendar to make it easier. Also, if requested, we will send you a green neon recycling sticker to place on your recycling container.

Recycling Leaves and Grass
Connecticut State Law requires that leaves need to be recycled which prohibits us from collecting them with your rubbish. The Southington Publics Works Department collects leaves at curbside during the town wide Fall Curbside Vacuum Service. For more information call the Southington Highway Department at 276-9430. Grass clippings can be mulched back into your lawn or composted for garden soil. Either way, this is great for the environment.
